Designers’ tilt turns into soap opera

MANILA, Philippines — Billed by its organizers as the first big fashion event of 2009, the Young Designers Competition (YDC) by Mega magazine held two weeks ago had the elements of a soap opera, albeit glossy: fabulous setting, stylish characters, aggrieved parties, word wars, temper tantrums, contested results and an ingénue who, in the end, triumphed against all odds.

With her collection of soft, flowing dresses dubbed “Transparency,” Parsons-trained Vanessa Ang, 26, bested seven other newbies to become the first woman to win Mega’s competition, now on its eighth year, held recently at EDSA Shangri-La hotel.
