Edu Manzano “strongly against” Son Luis’s Plan To Enter Politics

For the first time, Edu Manzano and Joey De Leon will have their project together in the upcoming show of TV5 this coming June in which will be airing every Sunday, entitled Game ‘N’ Go.

In one press conference that was held yesterday, May 24, in Delta Theater, Edu announces his insights with regards to their project of the comedian.

He said, “Pinag-uusapan nga namin ni Joey lahat nagawa na namin, e. Yun nga lang, except being together…

“But for me, golden opportunity dahil few times lately na magkakasama kami at nag-uusap kami, you know, nakita ko rin yung lalim ni Joey, e.

“Everybody looks at him as a funny man, komedyante, minsan critical, outspoken. Pero makikita mo rin yung kanyang ibang aspeto ng buhay niya.

“I mean, ako, I have a lot of admiration kay Joey.”

Would the partnership do well on the both of you? Would you not be pissed off with each other’s jokes and punch lines especially you and Joey are not really close friends?

“Honestly? Inisip ko yun,” Edu admitted.

“Kasi iba minsan yung biruan ng mga magkakaibigan. Mapagpapasensyahan mo, or may balik ka kaagad dahil close kayo, e.

“But you know, Joey never means to be hurtful, e. Yung sa kanya, gusto niyang makapag-isip lang ng laughter, e.”

“Dahil madalas nilang napag-uusapan lately ang show, dun nakikita ni Edu na “maganda yung fit.”

He added, “You know, masasabi mong cool, e, like kanina, sinasabi niya, ‘O, nagbabatuhan na kami, ha?

“Ako, I don’t mind yung ako yung taga-deliver at siya yung taga-punch line e.  Okey lang sa akin.”

One thing he assured is that the punch lines of him and Joey would not be scripted.

“Wala… Kahit siya wala, e,” he uttered.

“Huwag mo siyang bibigyan ng script kasi kung may script, lilihis yun for sure.  Depende sa kung ano ang mararamdaman mo at that moment at kung ano ang isasagot ng isang tao, doon mo ididirekta ang bato mo.

“So, ako, hindi ako umaasa na susunod sa script si Joey De Leon.”

Do you guys have a bonding before the show starts?

“No, I think it’s mutual respect, e.

“Ako, kahit sa ibang programa, pinapanood ko siya. Nakikita ko yung relationship nilang tatlo,” ang ang tinutukoy niya ay ang TVJ (Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey).

As he continues, “Yung naririnig mo… kasi, I read his column every Sunday, e, sa Philippine Star. Well-travelled siya. At laging may gusto siyang mga bagong mga experiences at ganundin ako.

‘I think, we have so much to learn from each other.”

NO MORE POLITICS. The conversation shifted to the fact that the filing of candidacy of those who want to run for politics is approaching very near.

Edu said that he has no interest to be involved in politics again.

He said: “No, actually, I gave it my best and that was very sincere. Sabi nga ng iba kong nakakausap, there were very many ways to be able serve as artista or public servant. Isa nga dun yung tinayo naming cancer wards sa Philippine Children’s Medical center na naisulat na ng ibang members ng press.

“To this day, we continue to support yung project na yun for children below the age of 18 na may cancer. Dun ang chemotheraphy, [blood] transfusion… Dinesensyo namin yung buong ward sa may kanto ng Quezon Boulevard.”

Even having the position or privilege to lead any of the government agencies or office like optical Media Board (OMB), in which he is formerly committed, he has no interest at all.

“Honestly, nung tinanggap ko yung OMB in 2004, tinigil ko na yung pag-a-artista, e. I stopped doing movies. Wala na ako ni isang pelikulang ginawa.

“Ilang years din ang ibinigay ko, sakripisyo.

“Six years na hindi ako tumanggap ng pelikula and then 2007, hindi na ako tumanggap ng teleserye.

“So you know, kung financial sacrifices marami na akong nagawa, e,” he said.

BEING A KAPATID. Edu was from GMA-7 before he transferred to TV5 again.

A lot of people say that it was very unproductive of Edu transferring to the Kapuso Network coming from ABS-CBN because there are shows that were promised to him but haven’t given to him.

“Hindi naman sa ipinangako,” Edu clears the matter. “It’s just that, sometimes kahit gusto mong i-expand yung mga tema or yung mga konsepto o mga programa, ratings war talaga, e.

“You know, ayaw mo talagang sumugal sa mga bagong konsepto kasi nalalaglag kaagad.

“Kahit sabihin natin na isang istasyon ang lumalamang, next week yung kabilang istasyon naman. Ayaw mo talagang lumaki yung difference in ratings dahil aminin na natin, it’s a business, negosyo. Lahat, e..

“In the case of competing studios, may mga stockholders na ‘yan, e. They have responsibilities sa kanilang mga stockholders. So, kahit minsan gusto nilang pagbigyan yung ibang konsepto, pag nalaglag ‘yan at naapektuhan ang advertising revenue. mananagot sila ngayon sa kanilang mga share holders.”

Edu was somehow contented with the offer that TV5 gives.

“Kaya nga nakagiti ako, e,” ang kanyang nasambit.

“Actually, as you know, sila nag-i-eksperimento talaga. Even yung konsepto nila, yung programming, iniiba nila to give people an alternative form of programming.

“Isa yun sa mga bagay na nagustuhan ko and sometimes it takes a while kasi nasanay na ang mga tao sa isang time slot na ‘eto lang ang ipinalabas. Sa ibang time slot, ‘eto naman ang ipinapalabas.

“Ngayong gusto nilang i-mix and hopefully, magustuhan ng mga tao.”

Edu signed a contract with TV5 but he don’t believe in exclusivity.

“Actually, its not it’s exclusive. It’s just that I respect that they’re investing good money in me and I should give them the same respect.”

LUIS’S POLITICAL PLANS. With regards to the controversy spreading that Luis has a plan of entering the politics, Edu said directly and without hesitation that he is not in favor of this plan of his son.

“I told him no,” he said firmly. “I’m strongly against it because he’s doing good money.

“You know, he’s working very hard. And he could render public service in many other ways. There is always a sacrifice.”

Edu believes that it is hard to enter showbiz and politics at the same time.

Madi-divide yung atensiyon.

“The people do not deserve it, lalo na ngayon, we’re such a divided nation.”

When he accepted the position in Optical Media Board (OMB), “sakripisyo talaga nong 2004,” he said.

Kahit  talagang offer. I don’t accept films anymore because I want to give it my 100 per cent. And I don’t believe in yung sinasabing quality time. Hindi quality time talaga yun!”

What’s the reaction of Luis when you said that you were not in favor of him entering the politics? Would he consider your advice?

The host-actor answered: “Well, ano kasi e, maraming nag-u-udyok sa kanya.

“But of course, minsan nakakataba ng puso. But you know, you should allow your better judgement.”

Have you not been talking with Vilma Santos regarding your son’s plan to enter the politics?

“No, Vilma is entitled to her own opinion as I am entitled to mine.

“But I feel what is more important, Luis is 32 years old. He has to understand his ramification sa kanyang desisyon. Like halimbawa, hindi ka naging matagumpay sa pulitika, makakaapekto rin sa career mo, e.

“You have to understand na ang taong bumoboto sa iyo, buhay ang ibinibigay nila sa iyo. So, they deserve your unlimited time and attention.”

THE GIRL FOR LUIS. Which do you prefer for your son? Luis wouldn’t enter politics or that Luis will marry her present girlfriend, Jennlyn Mercado?

“A, siyempre, gusto ko makahanap siya ng babaeng magmamahal sa kanya.”  He answered quickly.

Does Jennylyn met your standards? Does Luis found the girl for her?

“Actually, nakilala ko si Jennylyn before na nakilala niya si Luis. Even sa case ni Angel…

“You know, you show me a child who shows a lot of love for their parents, I will always have a soft heart for that child.

“So, nakita ko si Angel and her father. Nakita ko si Jennylyn and her mother. Pero yun yung mga qualities na nakakalimutan natin sa ating naging propesyon o sa ating industriya.

“But ang dami nilang common likes ni Jennylyn, e.”

Edu is happy with the fact that Jennylyn and Luis has time for each other.

“You know, nagugustuhan ko yung fact na they’re spend a lot of time together, not only working together.  Iba yung nagtatrabaho kayo at iba yung meron kayong buhay sa labas.”

Have you and Jennylyn talked to each other?

“Nagugulat ako minsan kasi kapag nagpupunta ako sa ibang lugar at natataon nandun siya at nalalaman niya, agad na nilalapitan ako.  Kaya minsan, nagugulat ako kay Jen, e.

“So, I like yung attitude niya, yung quality na ‘yan.

“But at the end of the day, kung saan happy ang anak ko, doon ako.”

In what you see with Luis and Jennylyn’s relationship, you think he finally found the girl she would marry someday?

“Well, matagal ko na siyang hindi nakikitang masungit, e. Magandang senyales ‘yan, e. I hope so,” Edu said.
