Sarah G. nominated in World Music Awards

Filipino singer-actress Sarah Geronimo is a nominee for Best Female Artist at the 2013 World Music Awards. She competes against Adele, Beyonce, Celine Dion, Madonna, Britney Spears and more for the top prize.

She has also been nominated for World’s Best Live Act (other nominees include Psy and David Bowie) and World’s Best Entertainer of the year (other nominees include Justin Bieber and Katy Perry).

The World Music Awards recognizes the best-selling recording artists from all over the world. Nominees are selected based on record sales and online voting.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) first selects nominees by conducting an inquiry of sales figures and record certifications from all major territories. The top-selling artists are then announced as nominees on the World Music Awards website for fans all over the world to vote for their favorite.

The WMA has been bequeathing awards to artists from every continent since 1989. According to its official website, the WMA has helped artists reach global success and expand their fan base.

From 1989 to 2008, the WMA has held its awarding ceremonies in Monaco, Las Vegas, California and London. In 2009, 2011 and 2012, no award ceremony was held.

The WMA website has not yet released details about the award ceremony or concerts.

Eddie Garcia and Nora Aunor bag acting honors at 7th Asian Film Awards

The Philippines won big at the 7th Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong, where Eddie Garcia and Nora Aunor received top honors, including Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.

Eddie went on stage to accept his award for  playing an ageing gay who takes care of a stray dog in  Jun Lana’s “Bwakaw.”  He also won the People’s Choice Best Actor Award, determined through a voting poll in Yahoo! Movies.

He bested four award-winning Asian actors, namely  South Korea’s Choi Min Sik (Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time), Hong Kong’s Tony Leung (Cold War), China’s Liu Ye (The Last Supper) and Taiwan’s Joseph Chang (GF*BF).

Nora was also there to receive her award for playing a barren Badjao midwife in Brillante Mendoza’s “Thy Womb.” She bested four other actresses, namely South Korea’s Choi Min Soo (Pieta), Afghanistan’s Golshifteh Farahani (The Patience Stone), Taiwan’s Gwen Lun-Mei (GF*BF) and China’s Hao Lei (Mystery).

Nora was nominated in the People’s Choice Best Actress category, but she lost to  Choi Min Soo. Eugene Domingo, last year’s winner, presented the award.

The Best Picture award went to “Mystery,” while Kitano Takeshi was named Best Director  for “Outrage Beyond.”

The awards night was held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre  on Monday, March 18.
