Japan Gives Charice a Gold Record Award

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

The International singing sensation Charice Pemepengco is now a certified gold record icon in Japan. Her self-titled hit album was released last July 7, 2010 and sold more than a thousand copies a week after its first release.

The Japan edition of the album contains the song Crescent Moon, an English rendition of the hit Japanese song “Mikazuki” by Japan’s popular pop singer Ayaka. The singer tweeted “Chyeaa! My Album “Charice” is now certified GOLD in Japan! Thank you so much for the support!!! Japan, thank you so much :) ,” after she received her gold record award.

This 18-year old singing sensation started her career from her homeland The Philippines by joining singing competitions to help her single mother in earning money for a living. Her performances in the competitions she joined in were posted on YouTube by her fans and gained millions of hits. This made her way to be noticed in the Asian region and later on brought her to a popular Korean show Star King.

Her strong and powerful voice paired with an amazing character got her to other US hit shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show. After guesting, her career moved forward and started to grow. She has then performed with big stars like Celine Dion, Josh Groban and David Foster. She is also known as Oprah’s favorite, giving her a ‘Most Talented Kid in the World’ title.

She was also recently hailed as Icon of Tomorrow by J-14 magazine, the top teen celebrity magazine in America. She won over the other top U.S. teen stars. Her mother’s effort in campaigning her daughter together with the Charice Internet Army is said to be one of the biggest factor of her winning the award.

The international song writer and artist, Ne-Yo also expressed his interest in collaborating with Charice when they got to talk at the backstage during one of their concerts in America. Ne-Yo is the man behind the songs “Irreplaceable” of Beyonce and “Take A Bow” of Rihanna. It would be so awesome if he writes a song to be sang by Charice in the future.

Charice is also to sing on NBC’s 13th Annual “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special that will be held on November 30 (8-9pm ET/PT) in New York City. The star-studded holiday special will feature performances by Susan Boyle, Mariah Carey, Charice, Sheryl Crow, Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins, Annie Lennox, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Simpson and The Radio City Rockettes with a mix of current hits and holiday classics.

“Where to live?” Noynoy Aquino

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

He’s only got two weeks left before he assumes the presidency, but President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is still undecided on where he’ll live once he’s the chief executive.

Aquino said he is still choosing among at least three options, although he noted that Bahay Pangarap inside the Presidential Security Group (PSG) compound near Malacañang seems to be the best choice.

“Pangarap seems to be the best, minimal ang idadagdag o ire-replace,” Aquino said in an interview with reporters in his Times Street home in Quezon City Tuesday night.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo usually receives important guests at Bahay Pangarap. Because it only has one room, another room has to be constructed for Aquino’s aides if he decides to live there.

Three of Aquino’s sisters have said Bahay Pangarap seems to be the most plausible option for the 50-year-old Aquino, a bachelor.

Aquino said another being considered is the Goldenberg Mansion, also near Malacañang, which used to be the office of the Marcos Foundation. It was also used to hold former First Lady Imelda Marcos’s collection of excavated porcelain and pottery.

But Aquino noted that the Goldenberg Mansion was about the size of the Arlegui mansion, which he said was “too big.”

Aquino said he is envisioning the Premier Guest House — where former President Joseph Estrada stayed — to be his and his executive secretary’s office.

“One would not want to have the living and office sections in the same building, baka makalimutan ng tao may time-off,” Aquino said.

Times Street home

Aquino now appears to be averse to the idea of residing at his Times Street home, saying he wants to spare his neighbors from rallies. Even though he has yet to take his oath as president, militant groups have already held brief protest rallies in front of his house.

Aquino said that while he may use his Times Street home to meet with some congressmen and officials of departments in Quezon City, he still wants to “preserve” his house, which was bequeathed to him by his mother, the late former President Corazon Aquino.

“Baka naman mamaya ang painting ng nanay ko magkaroon ng bagong autograph or signature (My mother’s paintings might end up with an additional autograph or signature,” he added in jest. Many of Mrs. Aquino’s paintings are displayed inside the house.

Despite this, Aquino said he would still stay in his Times Street home “from time to time” to take a break from work.

“If this house becomes unused it will deteriorate and I wouldn’t want that to happen. At kung gusto ko makahinga nang kaunti there’s nothing like home to do it in,” said the president-elect.

Aquino said one or two of his household staff would stay in his house once he has moved to his new official residence. He will take his oath as the country’s 15th president on June 30 at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. — RSJ, GMANews.TV

“Quit Smoking” Obama advice to Noynoy

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Barack Obama has offered to help Philippine president-elect Benigno Aquino quit smoking, as the US leader phoned to extend his congratulations, the incoming Filipino leader said Thursday.

Obama, who has fought a public battle to kick the habit himself, called hours after parliament proclaimed Aquino the official winner of the May 10 election on Wednesday, the new president-elect told reporters.

“At some point I attempted some humour,” Aquino said.

“I said, ‘Mr President I understand we have the same issue with smoking.’ He told me, ‘Well, I quit that already. I quit, it’s your sole problem but I’m ready to offer advice.’”

Aquino said the US leader promised to send the advice “at the time that you decide to quit.”

The 50-year-old Aquino, said by former colleagues to smoke up to two packets a day, conceded during the election campaign that stopping smoking would be good for his health and that he intended to kick the habit eventually.

However he changed his mind after learning he had won, saying quitting now would add stress to his life, and he has pointed out that as long as he follows smoking regulations and does not bother anyone, he should be free to smoke.

Obama, 48, promised his wife he would quit smoking when he ran for president — but has admitted succumbing to the occasional cigarette several times since moving into the White House.

Aquino described his conversation with Obama as “very pleasant” and said he found the US leader “very sincere” in strengthening ties with the Philippines, a former colony and a military ally in Asia.

The two men touched on a possible visit by Aquino to Washington, Aquino told reporters, but the Filipino stressed he would have to attend to other concerns of the state first

Mayweather Jr. another excuse?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s comments hinting at his retirement from boxing has gone largely undetected by Congressman Manny Pacquiao, who is enjoying a vacation with his family in the United States.

“Wala pang reaksyon si Manny. Nagbabakasyon pa siya [Manny is yet to comment on the issue. He's still on vacation.],” said Pacquiao’s chief of staff Jake Joson to Yahoo! Southeast Asia, adding, “Let’s just leave everything to [Bob] Arum.”

Mayweather said in his video interview for the Make-A-Wish Foundation that he’ll be taking couple of years off the ring.

“I want to devote my time in my boxing gym and just give back to the homeless,” said Mayweather in his interview.

In an ABS-CBN report, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is not buying what Mayweather had said and believes that he “was just babbling.”

“You never know with Floyd. Sometimes he just talks for the sake of talking. If Floyd plans to take a year or two off, we should be seeing a formal press release soon,” Arum said as quoted by boxingscene.com.

“Nagpapataas presyo lang si Mayweather [Mayweather just wants to get a higher percentage in his purse],” added Joson in his phone interview with Yahoo! Southeast Asia.

But if ever the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout will not push through, Joson has this to say, “Kilala naman natin si Manny na as a boxer kahit sino lalabanan nya [As a boxer, Manny will fight anyone].”

A possible rematch between Pacquiao and new WBA super-welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, who finished off Yuri Foreman at the Yankee Stadium, is Arum’s Plan B according to a Philstar.com report.

Pacquiao will be back in the Philippines on June 14 to prepare for his legislative duties as representative of the lone-district of Sarangani, said Joson.

Taal Volcano is on Alert No. 2

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised its alert level from level 1 to 2 for Taal Volcano, following observations of “anomalous change.”
In a statement posted in its website , Philvolcs said “alert Level 2″ means the volcano is “undergoing magmatic intrusion which could eventually lead to an eruption.”
Philvolcs reminded the public that the main crater remains off-limits because hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur, along with the possible build-up of toxic gases.
Continued rise in number of recorded volcanic earthquakes, among other unusual volcano behavior, prompted Phivolcs to raise the alert level.
“For the past 24 hours, 32 high frequency volcanic earthquakes were detected. The size of recorded earthquakes has also been increasing. In addition, a low frequency type volcanic earthquake was detected on 02 June 2010,” Philvolcs added.
Philvolcs said temperature of the main crater lake also increased to 34 degrees Centrigade on May 24, relatively higher by 2 to 3 degress C from its temperature last May 11.
“The composition of Main Crater Lake water has shown above normal values of Mg/Cl, SO4/Cl and Total Dissolved Solids,” Philvolcs also said.
It also noted that steaming activities at the northern and northeast sides of the crater “occasionally intensified.” Philvolcs also noted there were “audible hissing sounds.”
“The recorded high frequency volcanic earthquakes could be the result of active rock fracturing associated with magma intrusion beneath the volcano. The fractures served as passageways through which hot gases from the intruding magma could escape into the Main Crater Lake,” Phivolcs said.

Manny Pacquiao rushed in the hospital

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

World welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao was admitted to hospital to treat a mild stomach ulcer and allow him to rest after campaigning for the May 10 congressional elections.
Pacquiao’s chief of staff, Jayke Joson, said Monday that doctors discovered the 31-year-old boxer had an ulcer during a routine checkup Sunday and his family convinced him to stay in a suburban Manila hospital for a few days.
“Really, Manny can only rest if you confine him to a hospital,” Joson told The Associated Press, adding Pacquiao was receiving intravenous dextrose drips. “It’s been so intense a campaign, he missed some of his meals.”
Pacquiao’s boxing promoters are working toward a possible bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., or another fighter, as early as November.
Pacquiao’s mother, Dionisia, told The AP her son was well and may be discharged from the hospital later Monday or Tuesday.
Pacquiao won a seat in the Philippine’s powerful House of Representatives, which he will assume on June 30. Aside from preparing to enter the political arena, Pacquiao is yet to complete advertisements for products ranging from food to sports items, Joson said.
Promoter Bob Arum has said he’ll soon start talking to Mayweather’s camp about putting together the world’s top two welterweights for a Nov. 13 bout in Las Vegas or Texas.
Arum said he hoped to match Pacquiao against former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito if talks with Mayweather fall through.

Celebrities given no VIP treatment as they participate to the Historical First Automated Elections

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Many famous television personalities have made an effort to vote for their electoral bets enduring lengthy line ups and the searing sunshine just to prove their loyalty and concern for the country and its people. Though it was not expected that these people will not be given any special treatment, several people also were not surprised since it was the first automated elections in the country, and doing such would be a shameful act even for these people’s stature.

Take for example the Gutierrez siblings who has successfully cast their votes despite several obstacles along the way. Most of these actors and actresses were indeed amazed by the swift process employed by the new Automated method. However there were also some who were not satisfied with the current process being used since it took much more time than they anticipated. One of these people were Cesar Montano, who is running for gubernatorial position at Bohol.

On the other hand some like Christian Bautista made sure that everything should be alright since he believes that voting is very important for the Filipino People. One thing is constant however, it is necessary to be a part of the proud Filipino History, and it is through this Elections that we make History.
